ACCRA: Women in Aviation International (WAI), Ghana Chapter, marked the 10th annual Girls in Aviation Day at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), celebrating the event's global mission to inspire, educate, and empower young girls to pursue careers in the aviation industry. Mrs. Edith Penelope Arhin, Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Immigration Service at KIA, commended the initiative as a vital platform for uplifting young girls and connecting them with seasoned professionals. According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Arhin, who also serves as the Regional Commander at KIA, highlighted the significance of the day's theme, "Mentor, Inspire, and Empower Girls." She urged attendees to seize the opportunity to learn from accomplished figures in aviation, whose stories could serve as inspiration for their future endeavors. The event, organized by the WAI Ghana Chapter and sponsored by entities including Ghana Airports Company Limited, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, and major airlines, aimed to motivate girls aged 8 to 18 to consider aviation careers. Selected students from several Ghanaian schools participated in the event, which underscored the hope and potential of the next generation of female aviation professionals. Mrs. Arhin emphasized the importance of courage, commitment, and a passion for learning in overcoming the challenges within the aviation sector and encouraged young girls to aspire to new heights. Mrs. Cynthia Kukah, Treasurer of the WAI Ghana Chapter, noted that since its inception in 2015, the chapter has been dedicated to advancing women and girls in aviation. She shared that Girls in Aviation Day is celebrated in over 19 countries with more than 150 events globally. This year's activities included educational sessions, tours, exhibitions, and interactions with industry professionals, designed to spark interest and inspire the youth. Mrs. Kukah also encouraged participating schools to establish aviation clubs to further engage students, particularly girls, in the field. The event featured several spea kers, including Mrs. Eloina Baddoo from Delta Air Lines, Madam Felicia Edem Attipoe from Tema West Assembly, and Mrs. Elsie Adikie Okutu-Bediako from United Airlines, who all contributed their insights and experiences. Women in Aviation International is committed to the advancement of women in aviation and aerospace careers through educational outreach and events like Girls in Aviation Day, which seeks to inspire the next generation of female aviation professionals worldwide.
