KUMASI: The Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Ashanti Region has urged Ghanaians to uphold unity and peaceful coexistence as the nation approaches its December elections. The chiefs emphasized the importance of maintaining peace to ensure the continued development and transformation of the country. According to Ghana News Agency, the Council issued a declaration in Kumasi, endorsed by Nana Musah Akambonga, President of the Council, highlighting the significance of the upcoming election as the ninth since Ghana returned to constitutional rule in 1992. The statement stressed that peaceful cohabitation and respect for the electoral system are essential for a thriving democracy. The tribal leaders underscored their role in advising political actors to educate their supporters on maintaining peace throughout the election period. They advocated for constructive dialogue over violence and intimidation during campaigns, noting that Ghana's successful electoral history has set a benchmark for other African nations. The chiefs called on citizens to cherish this legacy by promoting unity and understanding in political discussions. The Council also recommended that political parties, civil society, and the media collaborate with the Electoral Commission (EC) to address challenges and reach consensus to reduce tension. They urged the EC to lead these collaborations and consider constructive suggestions to enhance the electoral process. The chiefs concluded by affirming the collective responsibility to uphold democratic principles and secure a promising future for Ghana.
